“They come dressed to the nines,” says Justin Moyer, production manager for Strip Strip Hooray. He’s referring to the pantheon of fans that flock to the performance, one of the preeminent shows in the neo-burlesque scene. Most come for Dita Von Teese—a pioneer of contemporary American burlesque and authority on elegance—although co-stars Murray Hill, Dirty Martini, Perle Noire, Selene Luna, Monsieur Romeo, Lada Nikolska and Catherine D’Lish command followings of their own. Fans come decked out in garters, bustiers and voluminous hair, helping to enshrine the atmosphere that Dita and company have worked so hard to create.

People Style Watch: Dita Von Teese Takes Us Backstage — and Shares the Surprising Place She Spritzes Perfume

Though the rest of us may never wear jeweled corsets and red-soled pointe shoes like Dita Von Teese, the burlesque superstar is hoping to share a bit of her experience with the world, bringing her fragrance and lingerie collections to HSN March 17.

“I’m a bit of a fragrance and lingerie snob,” Von Teese tells PEOPLE of her decision to market her lines to a wider audience on HSN. “Every woman should have luxury in her everyday life.”

And who knows fine undergarments better than someone who spends most of her working hours in gorgeous custom corsets? “The majority of lingerie that’s not my own that’s in my lingerie drawer is pretty expensive,” she says. “My goal is to make bras and panties that stand up to the ones I spend over $100 on.”

That includes fancy trims, lots of black lace and elegant garter belts. “My line isn’t the one to look for a white cotton bra,” she says. But that doesn’t mean that the average girl can’t pull off the look. “They’re a good place to start [with fancier lingerie]. Anyone who tries them will see that they’re very wearable.”

She also applied the same goal of wearable luxury to her fragrances (Dita Von Teese and Rouge). She designed the former after her boyfriend told her that her signature scent was also the one his mother wore; the latter is a sweeter scent that, she says, is fun for daytime.

The star gave us a glimpse into her backstage routine at her latest show, Strip Strip Hooray!, including her stunning collection of Christian Louboutins and her makeup routine. Vital to the performance: spritzing her fragrance “from the back of the knees down” since her feet are at about face height with the audience.

“And I can see strategic reasons for doing that in everyday life, if you know what I mean!” Von Teese says with a laugh — bringing it all back to the lingerie.

Von Teese’s intimate apparel will range from $25-$45 and her fragrance starts at $20. Check out both when they debut on HSN on March 17.

Dubbed a “burlesque superheroine” by Vanity Fair, Dita Von Teese is one of the biggest proponents of the art form’s recent comeback. Born blonde Heather Sweet in a mid-size Michigan town, Von Teese quickly transformed herself to match the 40s movie stars and pinup girls she idolized—from her iconic dyed-dark hair and bright red lipstick to her cultivated collection of corsets. Now a published author, accomplished designer, sometimes actress, and soon-to-be perfumer, Von Teese is still bring vintage sexy back with her touring burlesque show, “Strip Strip Hooray!” The Eye talked to Von Teese about her tour’s upcoming New York stops, the importance of a good perfume, and how to top “the Marquis de Sade’s corseted sex slave” on her roster of past Halloween costumes. Friday, October 12, 2012

Tue Oct 30 – Thu Nov 1
Gramercy Theatre, 127 E 23rd St, New York

If ogling girls in slutty costumes isn’t your bag, consider this evening of entertainment a classy take on the Halloween-as-an-excuse-to-show-some-skin trend. Von Teese, the reigning queen of burlesque, hits NYC for a string of exceedingly rare performances, just in time for the holiday. Expect the doll-like provocateur (who, despite all appearances, turned 40 this fall) to don multiple dazzling, bejeweled outfits. Acting as Von Teese’s bustier (by which we mean “supporting”) are Gotham burlesque scenesters like host Murray Hill and Dirty Martini. Be prepared to sully yourself on the secondary market—tickets are selling fast.
