WHEN it comes to creating an eye-catching campaign, calling on burlesque performer Dita Von Teese to model your wares scores highly in our book and that’s exactly what Dita Eyewear has done. In this case – as the name belies – the collaboration is all the more poignant, as Von Teese is the namesake of the brand.

“I have a very personal history with the brand,” she told us. “Founder John Juniper met me in 1993 and we became fast friends. He asked me if he could start a sunglass brand named Dita, which was the name I had been calling myself since 1991 as a pin-up model and burlesque dancer. I agreed and he photographed the very first prototypes on me.”

Joined by legendary tattoo artist Mark Mahoney on the shoot, Von Teese was once again shot by Juniper, as well as fashion photographer Lionel Deluy, for the label’s autumn/winter 2013 lookbook.

“When I think back on how the name I somewhat flippantly chose to call myself not only turned into the huge brand-name it has for me, but also what it has for John, it’s quite amazing,” she revealed.

And the star has already eyed up her favourite pair. “It’s a pair of optical frames that I love best. There’s something about wearing high-glamour make-up and hair paired with sexy, studious frames. It’s so chic.”

A Tale of Two Ditas – DITA Eyewear founders Jeff Solorio and John Juniper enlist burlesque performer Dita Von Teese and Mark Mahoney, the proprietor of the Shamrock Social Club in Hollywood, for its fall 2013 campaign. “Mark and Dita individually epitomize sartorial elegance and evoke a time lost when people were more stylized and paid attention to every detail – especially their eyewear,” says Solorio of the casting choice. The two pose for Lionel Deluy and John Juniper in classic eyewear styles from the brand.
