Dita Von Teese: Accidental Ecoista
December 05 2009

Vanity Fair called her a “Burlesque Superheroine” for appearances on international stages in which she strips down to pasties in an oversized martini glass or on a nine-foot mechanical lipstick “bull.” She writes books on burlesque (see below for the latest). But Dita Von Teese is known as much for her vintage looks off-stage as her lack of clothing on it.

Yes, she still wears vintage fur and no, we’re not thrilled with that. But the performer has done more to promote retro fashion than any other style icon in history, with designers like Christian Dior, John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier crediting her with inspiring their return to retro glamour, and manufacturers like Wonderbra turning to her to create an eponymous vintage-inspired, limited edition lingerie collection.

Earlier this year and just back from Paris, where she was the first ever guest star at the famed Crazy Horse theatre, Dita took a break from planning two new burlesque shows—“Opium Den” and “Rhinestone Cowgirl”—as well as a striptease “flip-book” shot by famed photographer Sheryl Nields, to talk with EcoStiletto about how she became an Ambassador of Vintage—and what we like to call an Accidental Ecoista.

Dita is on the cover Elle Finland (November, 2009). The likelihood of me finding a copy is slim, so don’t hold your breath for scans. The cover shot isn’t from a new photo shoot, though.

Dita talks to The Daily Beast

Dita Von Teese talks to The Daily Beast about her sexy new flipbooks, why America can’t handle her moves, and the secrets of old-school burlesque.

America may have just lost burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese to Paris. The 37-year-old Michigan-born performer (née Heather Sweet) finished a run at Paris’ Crazy Horse and has purchased an apartment there (it’s also the home of boyfriend Count Louis Marie de Castelbajac). LA’s “mini skirts and UGG boots” style and permanent sunshine are part of what drove Von Teese to take flight, so she can “fall back in love with LA.”

She says she believes Europe gets her and her art in a way that some in her native country don’t. “Some people really think that all I do is wear red lipstick and dress in vintage clothes and cruise around,” said Von Teese while in Beijing, where she recently performed for a GQ China event. “In France and the U.K., they can show what I do on TV. The Jay Lenos of Europe all have me on. In America they’re obsessed with pop stars and maybe they’re a little bit afraid of having me on there because they think what I’m talking about and what I’m doing is too risqué.”

Be Cointreauversial, São Paulo

During Dita’s recent trip to Brazil, a handful of fans had the opportunity to attend the Be Cointreauversial party. Marina was one of them and has generously offered her perspective (in English and Brazilian Portuguese!), as well as some lovely photos from the event! Thank you Marina!

English: The Cointreau party in São Paulo (Brazil) was just amazing for me! I was completely insane by the fact that Dita Von Teese, Queen of Burlesque and my biggest idol was going to be in the same place I was. I was really in shock when she entered the place and I took a picture with her for the first time with the other beautiful fans (to whom I have to thank you a lot for sharing with me on that special night). The drinks were great and also the music and everything… and then the stripteese! Classy, glamourous and really, the most gorgeous woman of Earth! After, we met her again, I took a picture with her and she autographed my book (moments I will NEVER forget!), she’s really sweet and delicate as her name suggests. Dita, we love you!
PLEASE: ignore my weird face, I was nervous!

- Marina (19, Brazilian)

Editor’s Note: Don’t ignore Marina’s face – she looks lovely! ;)
